Taken by the Dark Elf King : Chapter 28

Arkain

THE NIGHT SKY FADES FROM its inky black to a pale pink.

Dawn is here and I am still a fool. Gods, how could I have been so stupid to say those things to her? I should’ve offered to go to Lysan with her. Her family is my family now.

But instead, I called into question her feelings for me. Her character. When I should’ve been telling her how much I loved her. That even if this was all the time we had together it was more than I ever deserved.

Now it seems like I’ve ruined any chance of getting to right this wrong.

There is a sharp bang at my door. For a moment, I think it is Elvie but the voice on the other side quickly dashes those hopes.

“Your Majesty, this is urgent,” Aiko’s voice sounds grave. Oh gods, what now?

“What is it? A new development in the east?” I ask. “Is it Elvie?”

“It’s—I can’t believe I’m saying this, there are—”

“Light elves pouring out of Lastlight forest. Armed to the teeth and ready for battle. I’ll give you one guess as to who tipped them off to the portal in the forest.”

My knees grow weak and my vision darkens. Light elves pouring out of Lastlight. Elvie. She…betrayed me?

“It would appear that way, Your Majesty.” I had not realized I had spoken that sentence out loud.

“I told you she was not to be trusted, now we have invaders at our door calling for your head.” Wylan rakes a claw down his face. “Thank the gods you did not marry her or this kingdom would fall to her as queen.” My silence makes Wylan curse. “Fucking fool.”

My Elvie. The one who smiled with me and danced with me by the glowing willow. Who read with me every night in the library, and let me kiss her in my dining room. Who told me she was mine and that I was hers.

She has betrayed me. Just like my father always said. To let something go, is to lose it forever. I have lost Elvie. Did I ever really have her?

I can’t dwell on that now, even has my heart threatens to shatter in my chest. My kingdom needs its warrior king, not a male who’s been played for fool. A calmness settles over me as I look at Aiko and Wylan.

“How many males do they have?”

“A few hundred,” Aiko responds.

“And how many do we have?”

“Including the new recruits, I’d say maybe one hundred.”

I nod and move to my armor chest. “Find anyone who can fight and bring them to the west side of the castle. We are not going down without a fight.”

With ice in my veins and a broken heart, I prepare myself to defend my castle once more.
