Bossalicious Bad Boy: Chapter 11

CLARA

I stare at Alex from across the conference room, trying to focus on the presentation being given. But all I can think about is the way his dark hair falls effortlessly over his forehead and how his eyes have a magnetic intensity that seems to draw me in. I shake my head and remind myself that I’m here as an intern, not to be distracted by my incredibly attractive boss.

‘Why don’t we take a short break?’ Alex suggests, clapping his hands together and rising from his chair. The other employees quickly disperse, snatching up coffee cups and chatting animatedly with their colleagues.

‘Clara,’ Alex calls out, gesturing for me to join him near the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the city. ‘What do you think of the presentation so far? Any suggestions?’

‘Um, it’s great,’ I stammer, feeling my face heat up under his gaze. ‘Really informative.’

‘Good,’ he says, stepping closer. ‘I value your opinion, you know. You’re an asset to this company.’

‘Thank you, Alex,’ I reply, my heart pounding in my chest. This proximity isn’t helping me maintain my professional distance. ‘That means a lot.’

‘Look, I’m just going to say it,’ Alex says, leaning against the window. ‘I can tell there’s something between us. And I think we should see where it goes.’

I bite my lip, torn between my desire to explore this connection and the nagging feeling that I need to assert my independence. I didn’t work hard to get here just to fall into a relationship with my boss. ‘Alex, I appreciate your honesty but… I don’t think it’s a good idea.’

‘Is it because I’m your boss?’ he asks, his brow furrowing. ‘Because I assure you, your position here is secure regardless of what happens between us.’

‘Thank you,’ I say, taking a deep breath. ‘But it’s not that. It’s just… I need to maintain my independence and focus on my career right now. I hope you understand.’

‘Of course,’ he replies, his eyes searching mine for a moment before he nods. ‘I respect your decision, Clara. Just know that my door is always open if you ever change your mind.’

‘Thank you,’ I whisper, my heart aching with the weight of my decision. As we return to our seats, I can’t help but feel the loss of his warmth, and I wonder if I’ve made the right choice. With every step away from him, my resolve strengthens, but so does the longing in my chest.

As the presentation resumes, I force myself to concentrate on the slides and take detailed notes, determined not to let my attraction to Alex be a distraction. I need to prove to myself – and everyone else here – that I am a capable, independent woman who can succeed on her own terms. But as I glance at Alex one last time, I can’t help but wonder what might have been.

The scent of coffee wafts through the air of the break room as I pour myself a cup of tea, my thoughts still consumed by my decision to distance myself from Alexander. The ceramic mug feels warm in my hands, and I can’t help but think about how his touch made me feel.

‘Rough morning?’ Ruby asks, entering the room with her usual bright smile.

‘Something like that,’ I admit, leaning against the counter. ‘I’ve just been thinking about… you know, about Alex.’

‘Ah, the billionaire playboy,’ she says, taking a sip of her own steaming coffee. ‘I heard you two had quite the moment during the presentation.’

‘Word travels fast.’ I sigh, remembering the intensity of his gaze before we pulled away from each other. ‘But it’s not what you think. I told him I need to focus on my career and maintain my independence.’

‘Good for you!’ Ruby exclaims, placing a supportive hand on my shoulder. ‘But Clara, you need to be careful. A guy like that, he won’t give up easily. Trust me, I’ve seen it happen before.’

‘Really?’ I ask, curiosity piqued.

‘Yep. And let me tell you, it never ends well. You’re smart, talented, and driven – don’t let him distract you from your goals. Keep your distance, focus on yourself, and everything will fall into place.’

‘Thanks, Ruby,’ I say, feeling grateful for her guidance. She’s not only a coworker but a true friend, someone who genuinely cares about my well-being.

‘Anytime,’ she replies, giving my shoulder a reassuring squeeze. ‘Now, go kick some ass today!’

Over the next several days, I find myself reflecting on Ruby’s advice as I navigate the bustling office. The hum of conversations and clacking of keyboards serve as a constant reminder of the professional world I’ve chosen to prioritize. Yet, each time I catch a glimpse of Alexander, my resolve wavers.

In the quiet moments alone, I weigh the potential consequences of pursuing something with him against the satisfaction of carving out a successful career for myself. The more I think about it, the more I realize that Ruby was right – I can’t allow Alexander to deter me from my goals.

I shift my focus to excel in my internship, tackling projects with renewed determination. My days are filled with meetings, research, and networking events. Despite the whirlwind of activity, I can’t shake the lingering thoughts of Alexander and the what-ifs that continue to haunt me.

‘Great job on the report, Clara!’ my supervisor compliments one afternoon, snapping me back to reality. ‘Keep up the good work.’

‘Thank you,’ I reply with a smile, pushing the thoughts of Alexander aside once more. In these moments, I know I’ve made the right choice, but the battle between my heart and mind wages on.

Distancing myself from Alexander is necessary if I’m going to succeed in this internship and maintain my independence. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

‘Morning, Clara,’ Alexander says, entering the office with his usual confident stride. His piercing blue eyes meet mine, causing a flutter in my chest.

‘Good morning,’ I reply, forcing a neutral tone as I turn my attention back to the stack of papers on my desk.

‘Working on something interesting?’ he asks, leaning against the edge of my desk, his presence impossible to ignore.

‘Uh, just some research for an upcoming project,’ I say, doing my best to keep our interaction brief and professional.

‘Sounds exciting,’ he says, a hint of amusement in his voice. ‘Well, if you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask.’

‘Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind,’ I reply, avoiding his gaze. Alexander lingers for a moment, but eventually walks away, leaving me to my work.

Over the next few days, I do my best to limit our interactions, focusing on my tasks and surrounding myself with coworkers whenever possible. It’s not easy, as his magnetic presence seems to draw me in like a moth to a flame. But I know it’s for the best.

‘Hey, Clara,’ Ruby whispers as we huddle over a spreadsheet. ‘I’ve noticed you’ve been keeping your distance from Alexander. How’s that working out for you?’

‘Surprisingly well,’ I admit, my fingers flying over the keyboard as I input data. ‘It’s tough, but it’s helped me focus on my work.’

‘Good for you,’ she says, giving me an encouraging smile.

However, the more I avoid Alexander, the more I notice his puzzled glances and furrowed brow when our paths do cross. During a team meeting, he catches my eye and leans in to whisper, ‘Is everything alright, Clara? You’ve been… distant lately.’

‘Everything’s fine,’ I reassure him, trying to keep my voice steady and composed. ‘Just focusing on the internship.’

‘Alright, just making sure,’ he says, concern evident in his voice. His eyes search mine for any hint of deception, but I maintain my facade.

As the week wears on, I can’t help but feel a gnawing guilt over my actions. Alexander has always treated me with kindness and respect, but I know that maintaining boundaries is crucial for both my professional and personal growth. Each day is a struggle between my desire for independence and the undeniable attraction I feel towards him.

As I walk into the office, the memory of Alexander’s warm smile from yesterday lingers in my mind. It’s surprising how such a small gesture can make me feel so much more at ease around him. I take my seat at my desk and go about my day, noticing the occasional glance from Alexander, but without the usual intensity that made me uncomfortable.

‘Hey, Clara,’ Ruby calls out as she approaches. ‘How’s it going with you-know-who?’ Her eyes flicker towards Alexander’s office.

‘Actually, things have been… different,’ I admit, keeping my voice low. ‘He’s been giving me some space, and it feels like he’s respecting my boundaries more.’

‘Really?’ Ruby raises her eyebrows. ‘That’s unexpected. How do you feel about it?’

I hesitate for a moment before answering. ‘I think I appreciate it. But it’s also making me question my decision to distance myself from him.’

‘Ah, the classic internal conflict,’ she teases, though her tone remains sympathetic. ‘Just remember, it’s your life, and you get to decide what’s best for you.’

‘Thanks, Ruby. I’ll keep that in mind,’ I reply, feeling grateful for her support.

Later that afternoon, I find myself working late on a project, and Alexander steps out of his office.

‘Clara, are you planning to stay much longer?’ he asks, genuine concern in his voice.

‘Um, just finishing up this report,’ I say, my fingers flying over the keyboard.

‘Alright, don’t work too hard now,’ he says with a gentle smile, a stark contrast to the forceful demeanor I had come to expect.

‘Thank you, Alexander,’ I reply, touched by his consideration.

‘See you tomorrow then. Good night, Clara’ he says as he makes his way towards the exit.

‘Good night.’ I watch him leave, pondering over the shift in our relationship. It’s as if he’s become a different person—someone who truly cares for my well-being above all else. This newfound respect for my boundaries stirs a warm feeling within me, and I can’t help but be drawn to this gentler side of Alexander.

But with those feelings comes internal conflict. I’ve been so focused on maintaining my independence that I hadn’t considered the possibility of having a genuine connection with someone like him. Could I trust myself to not lose my sense of self if I let him in?

The office falls silent, leaving me alone with my thoughts. As the night stretches on, I weigh the pros and cons of letting Alexander back into my life. Each moment of contemplation only serves to deepen my uncertainty, leaving me unsure of what to do next.

‘Maybe… maybe I should give him a chance,’ I whisper to myself.

The next day flies by so fast that it’s time for lunch before I know it.

‘Clara,’ Alexander’s voice comes from the doorway.

I glance up to find him leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed and his gaze soft. ‘Yes?’

He comes close enough that only I can hear him. ‘Would you like to join me for lunch today? No pressure, just a casual meal between colleagues.’ He offers a smile, one that reaches his eyes and makes them sparkle.

My heart flutters at the sight, and I struggle to maintain my composure. ‘Sure, that sounds nice.’

‘Great,’ he beams, nodding towards the clock. ‘We can leave in an hour if that works for you.’

‘Perfect,’ I reply, returning to my work as Alexander retreats down the hallway.

As I continue typing, I find my thoughts straying to our upcoming lunch. It’s strange how much he’s changed since we first met—no longer the overbearing boss, but instead a considerate companion. Despite my initial resistance, I can’t help but feel drawn to him.

The hour passes quickly, and before I know it, Alexander is back at my door. ‘Ready to go?’ he asks, extending a hand to help me up from my chair.

‘Absolutely,’ I say, placing my hand in his. His touch sends a shiver down my spine, and I’m acutely aware of the growing attraction between us.

We walk side by side to the elevator, exchanging small talk about the latest company news and upcoming projects. Every word from his lips has me hanging on, eager for more insight into his life and thoughts.

Our lunch destination is a cozy bistro just around the corner from the office. The atmosphere is relaxed, and we settle into a corner booth, laughter and conversation flowing with ease.

‘Clara,’ Alexander begins, his voice tinged with vulnerability. ‘I want you to know that I truly value your friendship and working relationship. If I’ve ever made you feel uncomfortable or pressured, I apologize.’

I chew on my lip, surprised by his admission. ‘Thank you, Alexander. I appreciate that.’

He reaches across the table, placing his hand over mine. ‘I hope we can continue to grow closer as friends and colleagues, without any expectations or fears.’

My heart races, torn between my desire for independence and my growing feelings for this man who’s shown me nothing but kindness and respect. As our eyes lock, I realize that perhaps I can have both—with him by my side, supporting me rather than controlling me.

‘Me too,’ I say, hoping my words convey the depth of my emotions. And in that moment, it seems possible that together, we can find the perfect balance.

My fingers brush the cool glass of water in front of me, condensation sticking to my fingertips as I struggle to find the right words. Alexander’s piercing blue eyes never leave mine, and the weight of our conversation hangs in the air between us.

My heart hammers in my chest, caught in a tug-of-war between two opposing desires. The temptation to lean into Alexander’s embrace is nearly overwhelming, but the nagging voice in my head reminds me of Ruby’s advice and my own need for independence.

As much as I appreciate his newfound understanding and patience, I can’t help but feel the pressure of our unspoken feelings bearing down on my shoulders.

‘Hey,’ he says gently, offering me a tentative smile. ‘Let’s not let this weigh us down, okay? We’re still friends, and we’ll figure it out together.’

‘Right,’ I nod, forcing a grin. ‘Friends.’

Alexander pays the bill, and we walk back to the office side by side, the warmth of his arm brushing against mine sending shivers down my spine. In the elevator, our coworkers surround us, their chatter a welcome distraction from the tension that hums between us.

‘Alright, team,’ our manager announces as we step off the elevator. ‘We’ve got a big project coming up, so let’s give it our all. Clara, you’ll be reporting directly to Alexander for this one.’

I glance at Alexander, his eyes meeting mine with a reassuring smile. My stomach twists with anxiety – working closely with him will only make it harder to resist the growing feelings between us. But then again, maybe it’s a chance for us to prove that we can maintain a professional relationship without crossing any lines.

‘Sounds good,’ I say, trying to sound more confident than I feel.

‘Let’s do this, partner,’ Alexander chimes in, his enthusiasm contagious.

As we dive into our work, I can’t help but be impressed by Alexander’s dedication and focus, his billionaire persona fading into the background as he becomes just another colleague striving for success. And yet, every time our hands brush or our eyes meet, I’m reminded of the unspoken tension simmering beneath the surface.

Hours fly by, and soon enough, the office empties out for the night. It’s just Alexander and me, surrounded by the soft hum of computers and the distant sounds of traffic below. As I pack up my things, I find myself torn – drawn to the man who stands before me, offering friendship, respect, and possibly something more, but equally determined to carve out my own path and stand on my own two feet.

‘Clara?’ Alexander asks, concern etched onto his handsome face. ‘Is everything alright?’

‘Of course,’ I lie, forcing a smile. ‘I’m just…tired.’

‘Me too,’ he admits, rubbing the back of his neck. ‘But hey, we made some great progress today.’

‘Definitely,’ I agree, slinging my bag over my shoulder. ‘See you tomorrow.’

‘Goodnight, Clara.’

As I step out into the cool night air, my heart heavy with doubt and uncertainty, I know that I have a difficult decision to make. But for now, all I can do is take one step at a time, trusting that the path ahead will eventually become clear.
