Bossalicious Bad Boy: Chapter 3

CLARA

‘Clara! Over here!’ Ruby hollers, waving me over to her desk.

It’s been two weeks since I started working at this marketing firm as a junior marketing executive. Every day feels like an exciting new adventure.

‘Hey, Ruby,’ I say, walking over to her with a smile. ‘What’s up?’

‘Here’s that report you asked for,’ she hands me a neatly stapled packet, her nails freshly painted a vibrant shade of fuchsia. ‘You’re catching on fast around here.’

‘Thanks,’ I reply, taking the papers from her. ‘I’ve had a lot of help from everyone, especially you.’

‘Of course!’ she grins. ‘We’re all in this together, right?’

As I return to my own desk, I can’t help but feel a growing sense of comfort in my new role. The first few days had been intimidating, being fresh out of college and thrown into the fast-paced world of marketing, but I’ve quickly found my footing. The team has welcomed me with open arms, and I’m starting to learn the ropes of my job.

‘Clara, what do you think of this tagline?’ Michael asks, the copywriter for our latest campaign.

He leans over my shoulder, a friendly gesture that I’ve come to appreciate from my coworkers.

‘Let me see…’ I read the line he’s pointing to, then glance back at him. ‘It’s punchy, but maybe we could try something more direct? Like this?’

I offer a suggestion, and Michael nods thoughtfully.

‘Good idea,’ he agrees, scribbling down my input. ‘Thanks.’

‘Any time,’ I reply, feeling a surge of pride.

I’m really starting to prove myself as a valuable member of the team.

‘Alright, everybody, meeting in five!’ our manager announces.

We all scramble to gather our notes and head to the conference room. I take a deep breath, ready for another day of challenges and triumphs in my new role.

In the two weeks since I started, I’ve gotten to know some of my colleagues fairly well, including Mr. Johnson, the head of the department. His firm but fair approach has earned him respect from everyone in the office. My immediate supervisor, Ms. Lee, is a no-nonsense woman with a sharp eye for detail and an even sharper tongue.

‘Morning, Clara,’ Ruby greets me with a warm smile as I take a seat at my desk, right next to hers.

She’s been working at the marketing firm longer than I have. Her quick wit and friendly demeanor made her one of the most popular employees here.

‘Hey, Ruby,’ I reply, giving her a nod as I power up my computer. ‘How was your weekend?’

‘Fantastic! Went for a hike with my family. You?’

‘Good, just caught up on some Netflix shows,’ I admit with a small laugh.

Our conversations usually start like this, and I appreciate the camaraderie. It makes the workplace feel more like a second home.

‘Ooh, what were you watching? Any good recommendations?’ Ruby inquires, leaning over slightly.

Our shared taste in entertainment might deepen an already budding friendship.

‘Actually, I started watching this new sci-fi series called ‘Beyond the Stars.’ It’s surprisingly good, you should give it a try!’ I suggest, hoping the conversation will help pass the time before our morning briefing.

‘Sounds interesting, I’ll check it out,’ Ruby says, nodding enthusiastically. She then lowers her voice and leans in closer. ‘Speaking of stars, have you heard about the latest office romance?’

Her eyebrows waggle mischievously, indicating that she’s about to share some juicy gossip.

I feel a pang of discomfort but try to maintain a neutral expression.

‘No, I haven’t,’ I admit cautiously, aware that engaging in office gossip isn’t the most professional choice.

‘Well,’ Ruby continues, undeterred by my hesitance. “Apparently, Jack from the creative team and Sarah from social media have been seeing each other secretly for a couple of weeks now. I mean, can you believe it? They’ve managed to keep it under wraps until Lisa accidentally walked in on them during lunch.’

‘Wow,’ I say, feigning surprise while a small, disapproving voice in my head reminds me to be cautious with what I say. ‘I hope everything works out for them.’

I quickly try to steer the conversation back to safer grounds.

‘By the way, Ruby, do you happen to know if we’re expecting any updates from the social media team about our upcoming campaign?’

‘Ah, yes,’ she says, her expression turning serious as she snaps back into work mode. ‘I believe they’re presenting their progress during today’s briefing.’

‘Great, thanks for letting me know!”

‘And did you hear about the new project we’re starting next week?’ Ruby asks, her eyes wide with excitement.

‘Which one? We’ve got quite a few on the go,’ I say, genuinely curious.

My mind races through all the tasks and deadlines that lie ahead.

‘True, but this one’s huge,’ she leans in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. ‘Word has it that it’s a major luxury brand – top-secret stuff.’

‘Wow, that sounds exciting,’ I reply, careful not to let too much enthusiasm creep into my tone.

I don’t want to appear overly ambitious or nosy, but I can’t deny that the prospect of working on such a prestigious account is tempting.

‘I guess we’ll find out more during the team meeting later.’

‘Definitely,’ Ruby nods, taking a sip of her coffee. ‘It’s going to be a game-changer for the company, I can feel it.’

I nod in agreement, savoring the rich taste of my coffee as I mentally prepare myself for the rest of the day. I enjoy these small moments with Ruby. She’s friendly and outgoing, always eager to strike up a conversation with her colleagues. But I’m also careful not to cross any boundaries, maintaining a professional distance even as we chat about work matters.

‘By the way,’ Ruby says, suddenly leaning towards me with a mischievous glint in her eyes. ‘Have you heard anything about that new guy on the creative team? I’ve heard he’s quite the heartthrob.’

‘Really?’ I feign surprise, knowing full well that she’s fishing for gossip.

Steadying my voice, I quickly steer the conversation back towards safer ground.

‘I haven’t had much interaction with him yet, but I’ll have to keep an eye out during our next meeting. Speaking of which, I should probably get back to my desk and finish up some tasks before it starts.’

‘Of course, don’t let me keep you,’ Ruby smiles, seemingly unfazed by my subtle deflection. ‘Catch you later, Clara!’

‘See you around, Ruby,’ I reply warmly, standing up and heading back to my desk.

As I dive into my work, I can’t help but appreciate the relationships I’ve begun to form with my colleagues. In this fast-paced, high-stakes environment, it’s important to maintain both focus and integrity, while still allowing myself to make connections with those around me.

I step into the office kitchen, the scent of catered lunch drawing me away from my desk. As I fix myself a plate, I can’t help but overhear snippets of conversation from the creative team huddled in the corner. They’re deep in discussion about the latest ad campaign, and their enthusiasm is infectious.

‘Hey, Clara!’ Sam, the lead graphic designer, calls out to me, waving me over. ‘Have you seen our latest concept for the client’s branding? We’d love your input!’

I walk towards them, curiosity piqued.

‘Sure, I’d love to see it.’ I set my coffee down on the table, my eyes scanning the colorful sketches laid out before me. ‘These look fantastic! I especially like the minimalist design here; it’s clean and modern.’

‘Thanks,’ Sam grins, clearly pleased with my feedback. ‘We’re hoping this will give the client that ‘wow’ factor they’re looking for.’

‘Mind if I join you?’ comes a voice from behind me.

I turn to see Mike, the social media manager Ruby had mentioned earlier. Despite her gossip, he seems friendly and focused, the gambling debts she alluded to nowhere evident in his demeanor.

‘Of course, we could use some social media expertise,’ I say, trying to keep my tone welcoming and professional.

‘Great,’ he replies, pulling up a chair next to me. ‘Now, let’s talk hashtags and engagement strategies.’

As we discuss potential campaigns, I find myself immersed in the creativity and passion of my colleagues. The energy in the room is electric. I feel overwhelmingly inspired by their ideas.

‘Clara, your insights are invaluable,’ Mike tells me, sincerity in his eyes. ‘I think your fresh perspective is exactly what this project needs.’

‘Thank you, Mike,’ I say, genuinely touched by his compliment. ‘I’m just glad to be part of such a talented team.’

‘Speaking of which,’ Sam interjects, looking up from his sketches. ‘We’re organizing a team-building event next week – a little escape room fun after work. You should join us!’

‘Sounds like a blast,’ I agree, already feeling more connected to my colleagues.
