The Umbra King: World Guide

Realms:

Erdikoa

  • The light realm
  • Ruled by the Lux King
  • Consists of a sprawling city and The Capital
  • The Capital contains the Lux Palace
  • The Capital was enchanted by the seraphim so that any mystic other than the royals would lose their memory upon leaving; once they return, their memory of their time in The Capital is returned for the duration of their stay
  • Normal days and nights
  • Powered by the essence, or magical power that gives mystics their abilities, of the inmates in Vincula

Vincula

  • The dark realm (or prison realm)
  • Ruled by the Umbra King
  • Has no essence
  • When inmates arrive, they lose their abilities, as their essence is used to power Erdikoa
  • Inmates are immortal and unchanging while in Vincula
  • A large town with normal things imported from Erdikoa
  • Inmates not residing in the palace live in a large apartment building with their own apartments
  • Vincula’s “days” are the equivalent to dusk in Erdikoa
  • During Vincula’s night, there is no moon and no stars – Once a month on the Plenilune (the full moon in Erdikoa) they can see the moon and stars
  • Enchanted by the seraphim so that when inmates leave, they lose all memories of their time spent in the prison realm

Aether

  • Where the seraphim live, and where good souls go when they die

Hell

  • Created by different seraphim
  • Open to all realms regardless of who created them
  • Ruled by Orcus
  • Where wicked souls go when they die

Mystics:

Mystic type and abilities are not hereditary.

For example:

The heroine is a fey, her sister is a shifter, her mother is a sibyl, and her father is a sylph.

Aatxe

  • Gentle souls
  • Big in stature with small, bull-like horns on top of their heads
  • The only mystics allowed to be enforcers, due to their pure nature

Alchemists

  • The only mystics able to create potions and perform spells

Angels

  • Wings
  • Can shapeshift between several forms
  • Have been in the two realms for an unknown amount of time

Eidolons

  • Also known as phantoms
  • Can walk through any non-living object except iron

Fey

  • Have regular-sized ears with a slight point
  • Stronger and faster than other mystics
  • Graceful and light on their feet
  • Can see the souls of others by skin-to-skin contact

Merrow

  • Soul stealers
  • When someone dies, they capture their souls in a jar
  • They absorb the souls to heal injury or prolong their lives
  • All merrows must take a potion monthly to bind their abilities
  • The potion lasts two months, but they are required to take it every month in the event they try to skip, giving enforcers time to find them

Munin

  • Can manipulate memories
  • Anti-social, and do not like to spend time with other mystics other than fellow munin
  • Most live on a compound on the outskirts of the city (by choice)

Royal

  • Rulers of the realms
  • The Lux King/Queen – rules Erdikoa and controls light
  • The Umbra King/Queen – rules Vincula and controls darkness/shadows
  • The Scales of Justice – the final judge. Possesses the ability to see the souls of lesser mystics and the accused. When the Scales of Justice looks upon a criminal, they know the perfect punishment for their crime.

Seraphim (singular: seraph)

  • Creators of the realms
  • Reside in the aether
  • Celestial beings with large wings, feathers on their face revealing only their eyes and mouths, and feathers covering their legs

Shifter

  • Every shifter can shift into one specific animal
  • They do not have any animalistic qualities, even when shifted, other than their physical body when it shifts
  • Shifts are fast, and when they shift back to their mystic form, they still have their clothes

Sibyl

  • Oracles
  • Once their abilities manifest, they see every potential future
  • Their abilities begin to manifest in their 40s, and by 60, they take over fully

Sylph

  • They manipulate air

Visitant

  • Control the moods with skin-to-skin contact

NOTE:

There is an Aeternum, but it is a spoiler if explained.
