Trust No One: Chapter 38

Killing Janice was supposed to be easy.

It had started out that way. I didn’t even have to subdue her. The silly bitch passed out in shock when she realised I was behind her. Hauling her considerable weight into a chair had been more of a problem and I was doing that when I saw the flash of headlights and heard the car outside.

The plan had to be adjusted, petrol doused, the match lit. I couldn’t leave her alive. To keep things on track, she needed to die.

She was still out cold. Didn’t flinch as the liquid trickled over her. She only reacted when the flames caught hold, anguished screams crying out as the fire melted her flesh.

I had wanted to wait, make sure the job was finished, but there had been no time. The handle already turning on the door I had broken earlier. Instead I fled for the window and I was outside before anyone entered the room.

I am safe now, no one saw me, and that is the priority. I need to be safe because I have to finish this. Still I am frustrated. Last night didn’t go to plan.

Janice never repented for her sins. She never knew why she was being punished. And Olivia was supposed to see. But I have no video, no photo, not even a recording of Janice’s screams.

I only had one chance to kill Janice and last night I failed.

Of course I only realised quite how badly I had failed when I heard the news today, learned that Janice Plum hadn’t actually died. She is in a critical condition in hospital.

It is okay in that, if she ever wakes, she won’t be able to identify me. The mask has taken care of that, but how am I supposed to kill her now?

She has to die or the sequence will be messed up, but she will be in hospital under secure protection. I have missed my opportunity with her and can only hope that her injuries are so severe she won’t survive.

Frustration burns. I haven’t had closure with Janice. I have let you down.

That is the bit that stings the most. After everything that happened to you, the awful way your life ended, this was my chance to put things right and settle the score.

It was fate that I learnt the truth about what really happened that night and it was fate that put me on this path… but it will be karma that ends this.

The guilty have to pay and I cannot afford to lose sight of the final goal. There are two left to be punished. The instigators, the ringleaders. The final two are the reason you died.

Their time is almost here.

Soon.
